Supersuckers at Blueberry Hill on 10/27/03
We were pumped for this show since the day tickets went on sale. The new Supersucker CD rocks so we waited patiently. We get there and learn that a band called Supagroup was the opener. We had no idea who they were. However there were some great flyers that said "Supagroup vs Supersuckers" and that is what it turned out to be, a rock and roll showdown. Supagroup within about two notes had us freaked out they were so good. This was long-haired, Marshall stack, Gibson guitar in-the-face rock and roll. The two guitar playing brothers were all style. Benji the lead guitar player was beyond amazing. A lot of Angus Young in his style but that is really almost an insult to say. The guitar sound that he was putting out was part AC/DC, part MC5 but all his own. Just amazing to watch, totally into it and pulling out riffs that made you wish you could do them. His brother the singer/rythm guitar had the role down. All swagger and attitude that you expect from a rock and roll singer. The bottom end was held down as tight as a band can do it. We could have left after they were done and thought it was one of the best shows we've seen this year. In this rock and roll battle they came out as a hard hook to the face. The Supersuckers then came out with all the flair that you would expect. They launched into Rock and Roll Records (ain't selling this year) and showed that this was a battle to be taken seriously. Eddie had a smile on his face the whole time that would make you think he is the luckiest man alive, and I'm sure he thinks he is. They mixed in some of the great older stuff. "The Evil Powers of Rock and Roll" sounding great next to "Rock Your Ass," and that they did. The dual guitar play is a thing of beauty to watch. These guys fit together like a glove. Years of touring and loving what you do makes for an incredible band. So who won the battle? We did!
