The Damned at The Galaxy on 03/11/98

I don't even know what to say about this one. I've seen
everyone from Kiss and Aerosmith in the seventies, to B.B. King
and Albert Collins, to Black Flag and the Circle Jerks. There is
not much musically that I haven't seen. Some bands just get to a
point where you cannot describe how good they are in words. And
this was one of those nights. Even though it was only Dave Vanian
and Captain Sensible from the original band, the other musicians
were up to the task. Dave came out looking like a young Elvis.
He proved that of all the 70's punk bands he had the best voice
of them all. Captain came out in typical outlandish attire. He
was playing one of those new Les Paul DC's through a Boss GT-5.
He sounded awesome. I had read somewhere that he is a formally
trained guitarist, and he proved that. They went through all the
songs you'd expect. For the first encore Captain stripped down
to a pair of bikini briefs. The second encore he came out in a
wig and dress. At the end of the show he pulled off the underwear
and gave them to Beatle Bob! Later on Captain was seen standing
naked on the T-Shirt booth. Some of the highlights were "I Just
Can't be Happy Today," "Eloise," "Disco Man," "New Rose," "Neat
Neat Neat," and of course "Smash It Up." Like the song says,
"I'm going to scream and shout till my dying breath!" This will
go down as one of the best shows ever! However when I see
something this great, it reminds me that there is one thing
missing.
